The Fight Against Book Bans

ON DEMAND

Attempts to ban books have risen an astounding 20% in the first eight months of 2023 compared to the same period last year, according to ALA. On a local level, what is the public library’s role in addressing this issue?

Join us for a timely webinar on The Fight Against Book Bans featuring guest speaker Illinois State Senator Laura Murphy. Senator Murphy championed a measure in Illinois to make it the first state in the U.S. to prohibit the banning of books in libraries.

In this session, moderated by Carrie Pearson, Director of Product Sales at Innovative, participants will hear from Senator Murphy about why calls for banning books are on the rise and how libraries are fighting back at national, state, and local levels.

We will also ask the senator about:

  • Who are leading calls for banned books and how are they generating support?
  • How can local libraries fight back, such as through education or community conversations?
  • What are other ways libraries and patrons can protect the freedom to read and the right to access diverse and inclusive materials?

The session will conclude with ample time for questions to the senator.
